Hi Denise, no, as long as you do not use the starter it should not draw any power. So you could leave it in place and just not use it.
Sweet! I just started tearing down a '72 Honda 450 I found buried in the mud, under a collapsed shed. Tag on it's from '84 so likely's been there 25 years or so. Really like your bike and am thinking of going for cafe racer with my build.
